Sky-Watcher · Refractor · Up to 4 inches · Now discontinued (replaced by the Esprit 100EDX)
The Esprit 100ED is Sky-Watcher's 100 mm triplet apochromat for astrophotography. It's a 550 mm f/5.5 with an FPL-53 ED element in an air-spaced triplet, and it came as a complete imaging kit: a separate two-element field flattener for a flat 40 mm image circle, a camera adapter, tube rings on a Losmandy-style dovetail, a right-angle finder, a 2-inch diagonal and a padded hard case. The flattener needs 63 mm of back focus, which the supplied rings give a DSLR. The dual-speed rack-and-pinion focuser carries a camera without slipping. With accessories it weighs 16 lb, so it needs a solid equatorial mount. Sky-Watcher has since replaced it with the Esprit 100EDX, which makes the original a used buy.
The full kit
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Plenty of listings are the tube alone or the mount alone, and a missing hand controller, power supply or counterweight should come off the price.
The flattener, spacers and camera adapter are small separate parts that go missing, and without them the field isn't flat for a camera. The lens needs the usual check for haze. A 16 lb tube needs a stronger mount than many expect.
New to used telescopes? How to check a used telescope covers optics, mounts, power and shipping, and what a complete kit looks like helps with tube-only and mount-only listings.
Buying guide
Only one Esprit is listed, a Polish seller's "Esprit 100mm F/5 OTA" at $3,133 delivered, so the band is this one listing and not a market read. The title's f/5 doesn't match the 100ED's f/5.5, it names neither ED nor EDX, and the photo is a stock shot, so ask which model it is and for a photo of the tube markings before you buy. The 100ED came as an imaging kit, so check the field flattener and its spacer, the camera adapter, rings and dovetail are included, since without the flattener the stars won't be sharp to the corners. Expect longer shipping and possible import fees from Poland, and remember the tube weighs 16 lb with accessories, so it needs a solid equatorial mount.
