The EQ6-R Pro is Sky-Watcher's heavy-duty computerized equatorial mount, built on the earlier EQ6 Pro that Orion sold as the Atlas EQ-G. Sky-Watcher rates it for 44 lb, or 20 kg for imaging. The R version has belt drives between the motors and worm gears, a dual saddle that takes both narrow Vixen-style and wide Losmandy-style dovetails, a USB port for a computer, an ST-4 autoguider port and a locking power connector. It needs 12 volts at 4 amps. The head alone weighs 38 lb, the tripod 16.5 lb and each of the two counterweights 11 lb, so it's a two-trip setup. A complete one with its hand controller, cables and weights carries most amateur telescopes, which is why it's a common first serious imaging mount.
The full kit
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Plenty of listings are the tube alone or the mount alone, and a missing hand controller, power supply or counterweight should come off the price.
Hand controllers, cables and counterweights go missing from used kits, and a Wi-Fi version came without a handset at all. A weak power supply causes stalls, since it needs 4 amps. The drives should be tested under load.
New to used telescopes? How to check a used telescope covers optics, mounts, power and shipping, and what a complete kit looks like helps with tube-only and mount-only listings.
Buying guide
Only three EQ6-R Pros are for sale, so this isn't a market read, and the $3,525–3,550 band is just one new mount's $3,546 ask, more than double the $1,490 open-box head. We'd start with that open-box head, titled no tripod, but it quotes no shipping, and neither it nor the $2,000 auction head titles counterweights, a hand controller or a power supply, so ask what's in the box. Budget for a tripod, two 11 lb counterweights with the shaft and extension, a SynScan hand controller and a 12 V supply rated for at least 4 A if any are missing. Ask for a video of both axes slewing at full speed with its own controller, and plan for a 38 lb head when it ships.
$1,490.00+ ship
The lowest ask at $1,490, an open-box EQ6-R Pro head titled no tripod. No shipping is quoted and the photo shows the head bagged in foam, so ask which counterweights, cables and controller come with it.
