Brand
Sky-Watcher is the house brand of Synta, the Taiwanese optics company founded around 1980 by David Shen, which also built a large share of Orion's telescopes, and whose sister company SW Technology bought Celestron in 2005. Synta set up its Suzhou factory in China in 1992 and launched Sky-Watcher in 1999, selling first in Canada and Europe and later in the United States. Its EQ6 mount was on sale by 2002, and its Flextube collapsible Dobsonians arrived in 2008. Because the same factory made gear for several brands, some Sky-Watcher, Orion and Celestron products are close relatives, which helps when you need parts or software. Sky-Watcher is still in business and supports its current mounts and hand controllers.
