Sky-Watcher Flextube 8 GoTo
Sky-Watcher's Flextube Dobsonians, launched in 2008, solve the big-Dob storage problem by sliding the top of the tube down three poles. The 8-inch GoTo version, the Flextube 200P SynScan, adds motors and a SynScan hand controller with built-in Wi-Fi, so it finds and tracks objects from a database of 42,900. Its Freedom Find encoders let you push the tube by hand without losing alignment. Optically it's a classic 8-inch f/5.9 with a 1,200 mm focal length and a parabolic mirror, the same recipe as the best-loved manual Dobs. It runs on 12 volts, center positive. The tube collapses to 33 inches for the car, and the base weighs 33 lb on its own.

The full kit
What should come with it
- Tube with its three poles and base
- SynScan hand controller and its coiled cable
- 12 V power supply or battery pack
- 9x50 finder
- Eyepieces (the kit includes two)
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Plenty of listings are the tube alone or the mount alone, and a missing hand controller, power supply or counterweight should come off the price.
What to check
The SynScan hand controller, its cable and the power supply go missing from used kits, and the GoTo can't run without them. The motors need testing. The mirror coating dulls with age and damp storage like any reflector.
- 01Hand controller: Check the SynScan controller and its coiled cable are in the photos. Ask for a photo of it switched on.
- 02Slew test: Ask for a short video of it slewing up, down and around. Both motors should run smoothly without stalling.
- 03Power: Ask what power supply or battery comes with it. It should be 12 V with a center-positive plug.
- 04Poles: Ask the seller to extend the tube and lock it. All three poles should slide out and lock firmly.
- 05Mirror: Ask for a photo of the main mirror with a flashlight. It should be bright and even, with no gray patches.
- 06Firmware: Ask which SynScan firmware the controller runs. It can be updated from a computer if it's old.

Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 14, 2026No used Flextube 8 GoTo is for sale right now, only one new kit from Adorama at $1,399 with free shipping, so the band is that one listing and not a market read. Manual Flextubes were listed, but they have no motors or SynScan controller and aren't this scope. When a used one turns up, pick one with the SynScan hand controller, its coiled cable and a 12 V center-positive supply, or budget for them, and ask for a short video of it slewing up, down and around. The tube weighs 24.2 lb and the base 33 lb, so ask how it will ship or plan on pickup.
