Orion sold its ED80 refractor two ways: as a bare tube, and as the SkyView Pro 80mm ED EQ, the same tube on Orion's SkyView Pro equatorial mount with a finder, diagonal and two eyepieces. It was on sale by 2005. The tube is an 80 mm air-spaced doublet with an FPL-53 ED element, a 600 mm focal length at f/7.5 and a 2-inch Crayford focuser, all in a 5.7 lb aluminum tube. Synta made the ED80 for Orion, and it became a favorite first apo for both looking and photography because it's light, sharp and cools quickly. Orion closed in 2024. Check what you're buying, the tube alone or the full kit with the mount, because listings use the names loosely.

The ED80 tube with dust cap and 2-inch to 1¼-inch adapter
SkyView Pro mount head, steel tripod and counterweight
8x40 finder
Star diagonal and eyepieces (the kit had a 25 mm and a 10 mm)

Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Plenty of listings are the tube alone or the mount alone, and a missing hand controller, power supply or counterweight should come off the price.
What to check
Listings mix up the bare ED80 tube and the full SkyView Pro kit, so check what's actually included. The lens needs the usual check for haze and fungus, and the mount's counterweight and slow-motion cables go missing.
01Tube or kit: Check if the listing is the tube alone or the full SkyView Pro kit. The kit should include the mount, tripod and counterweight.
02Lens: Ask for a photo into the lens with a flashlight from the side. It should be clear, with no haze or fungus.
03Focuser: Ask the seller to rack the focuser in and out with a diagonal fitted. It should move smoothly without slipping.
04Mount parts: If the mount is included, count the counterweight and slow-motion cables. Both should be in the photos.
05Not the triplet: Check it isn't the ED80T CF, a different triplet. The doublet has a metal tube and ED80 markings.
06Packing: Ask how it will ship. The lens should be capped and the tube padded on all sides.
Only one Orion ED80 is for sale, so the $750–775 band is this one listing and not a market read. It's the tube alone from Germany at $764 delivered, titled near mint, and its 600 mm f/7.5 matches the ED80 doublet, not the ED80T CF triplet. The photo shows the tube with its caps but no mount, finder or diagonal, so budget for a mount and expect longer shipping and possible import fees. Ask for a flashlight photo into the lens at an angle, which should be clear with no haze or fungus, since Orion closed in 2024 and there's no factory support.
