Takahashi · Refractor · Up to 4 inches
The first Takahashi FC-100 came out in 1981, and the FC-100D family brought that 4-inch fluorite design back in several versions. The DC and DF share a 100 mm, 740 mm f/7.4 objective with the fluorite element at the back, behind an ordinary glass front lens. The DC is the light visual tube with a compact focuser, and the DF has a bigger focuser and a shorter tube for cameras. The DL was a 900 mm f/9 limited edition from 2015 that sold out by 2018, and the DZ arrived in 2019 with a new 800 mm f/8 objective. All of them are light enough for a modest mount, and a 4-inch fluorite apo shows the Moon and planets with almost no false color. Check the letter after the name, because the versions differ.
The full kit
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Plenty of listings are the tube alone or the mount alone, and a missing hand controller, power supply or counterweight should come off the price.
The listing title often says FC-100D without the last letter, and the versions differ in focal length and focuser. The lens and focuser are well made, so condition comes down to care. Adapters and finders go missing.
New to used telescopes? How to check a used telescope covers optics, mounts, power and shipping, and what a complete kit looks like helps with tube-only and mount-only listings.
Buying guide
Both FC-100D listings are FC-100DF sets on a Vixen SX2WL mount with accessories, so the price includes the mount, at $5,857 and $7,698 with free shipping from Japan. Two listings aren't a market read, and both show the identical photo, so at least one seller is using someone else's picture, and we wouldn't buy either until the seller sends fresh photos, including the tube's engraving reading FC-100DF. Ask for a flashlight photo into the objective and a list of the accessories the title mentions. Japan runs on 100 V, so ask what power supply comes with the SX2WL, and allow for import fees and a long shipping time.
