Takahashi launched the Sky90 in November 2000, after showing it earlier that year as the FCL90. It's a 90 mm fluorite doublet with a 500 mm focal length at f/5.6, the fluorite element in front, in a short tube of about 3.2 kg with its finder. That made it a fast, portable tube for wide-field photography and a sharp, compact one for looking. An Extender-Q stretches it to 800 mm for the Moon and planets, and a flat reducer takes it to 407 mm at f/4.5 for big star fields. Takahashi has since discontinued it, so used ones are the only way to get one, and the extender and reducer are just as hard to find as the tube.

What should come with it
Tube with dew shield and lens cap
6x30 finder
Tube rings or holder and a dovetail
Any extender or reducer the listing claims
Visual adapters for a diagonal and eyepieces
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Plenty of listings are the tube alone or the mount alone, and a missing hand controller, power supply or counterweight should come off the price.
What to check
The fluorite front element needs checking for scratches and cleaning marks. It's discontinued, so the extender, reducer and adapters can't simply be bought new, and listings without them are worth less.
01Front lens: Ask for a photo into the lens with a flashlight from the side. It should be clear, with no haze, fungus or scratches.
02Focuser: Ask the seller to rack the focuser end to end. It should run smoothly and hold its place.
03Extender and reducer: Check the photos for any Extender-Q or reducer in the title. Both are scarce on their own, so they should be there.
04Engraving: Read the name and serial on the tube in the photos. It should say Sky90, not a different FC or FS model.
05Mounting: Check for tube rings or a holder and a dovetail. The tube needs them for your mount.
06Packing: Ask how it will ship. A hard case or thick foam with the lens capped is right for a scope you can't replace.
Only two Sky90s are for sale, so the $1,575–1,675 band isn't a market read. We'd look at the $1,550 delivered tube from a 100% seller in Japan, $350 of that shipping, whose photo shows the finder and a lens cap; ask about import fees and how long it will take. The other is $1,694 delivered and titled with a tripod, but it's from a zero-feedback seller and the photo shows no tripod, so we'd pass. Neither titles the Extender-Q or the reducer, which are as hard to find as the tube now that it's discontinued. Ask for a flashlight photo into the fluorite front lens before you pay.
