Vixen started its Porta line of manual alt-azimuth mounts in 2005, and the Porta II is the version most people buy. It moves up-down and left-right on full-circle worm gears with slow-motion handles on both axes, so you can push it to a target and then track it smoothly at high power, with no counterweights and no electronics. Vixen rates it for about 5 kg (11 lb), and with its aluminum tripod it weighs 5.7 kg. A Vixen-style dovetail clamps into the saddle with a safety screw. That makes it a natural match for small refractors like an 80 mm apo or a 4-inch fluorite, and a quick way to get a scope out on a short clear night. Nothing on it needs batteries.
The full kit
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Plenty of listings are the tube alone or the mount alone, and a missing hand controller, power supply or counterweight should come off the price.
With no electronics, there's little to fail. Check the slow-motion handles are both there and the worm gears turn smoothly, and that the tripod legs lock. The 5 kg payload is the real limit, so don't plan to hang a heavy tube on it.
New to used telescopes? How to check a used telescope covers optics, mounts, power and shipping, and what a complete kit looks like helps with tube-only and mount-only listings.
Buying guide
We'd buy the used Porta II with a Vixen A80Mf refractor and tripod at $620 delivered from a 99.6% seller in Japan, a whole scope for about what most new mounts alone ask. Most of the at least 22 listed are new mounts and tripods from Japan dealers using the same stock photo, at $490–660 delivered, and sets with a Vixen tube make up the top of the $575–1,000 band. The used sets include an R130Sf reflector at $544 from a US seller and an ED80Sf apo with a case at $993, and the new AE81M 15th Anniversary set asks $1,297. It's a manual mount with nothing to power, so check that both slow-motion handles are there and turn smoothly, and that your scope comes in under its 5 kg payload. Japan listings take longer to arrive and can bring import fees, and we'd skip the 97% seller whose photo and title match another shop's.
