The Polarie U is Vixen's small star tracker, a camera mount that turns with the sky so you can take long exposures of the Milky Way without trailing. Vixen made the first Polarie in 2011 and the Polarie U in 2020. It weighs 575 g, carries 2.5 kg as standard and up to 6.5 kg with the Multi Mounting Block, and runs on four AA cells or USB-C power. It tracks at star, half-star, solar and lunar rates, has a Wi-Fi app for custom speeds and time-lapse, and even has an autoguider port. You aim it with a sight tube, and Vixen sells a proper polar scope separately. Put it on a solid photo tripod and it fits in a backpack.
The full kit
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Plenty of listings are the tube alone or the mount alone, and a missing hand controller, power supply or counterweight should come off the price.
The polar scope is a separate purchase, so many used units don't have one. Check the battery compartment for leaks and the USB-C port for damage. Make sure it's the Polarie U and not the original, which runs on two AA cells and carries less.
New to used telescopes? How to check a used telescope covers optics, mounts, power and shipping, and what a complete kit looks like helps with tube-only and mount-only listings.
Buying guide
Almost every Polarie for sale is the 2011 original (Vixen item 35505, and Polarie WT is the white one), not the Polarie U, and only a title that says Polarie U is the U. We'd buy the titled Polarie U at $517 delivered from a 100% seller in Japan; titled Polarie U listings ask $517–632 delivered, plus one at $856, all from Japan, so ask about import fees. The originals ask $204–447 delivered and make up most of the at least 27 listed and the $260–500 band, and they run on two AA cells and carry less, so buy one only to save money, like the $204 one titled tested. Ask for a photo of the battery bay and the name on the body, and don't expect a polar scope unless it's titled, since it's sold separately. Skip the $323 original from duck_shop_japan, which asks $600 to ship it.
