The 10-inch LX90 puts a bigger Advanced Coma-Free tube on the LX90's double-tine GoTo fork. The LX90-ACF manual covers 8, 10 and 12-inch versions, all f/10, all driven by the AutoStar #497 hand controller and powered by eight C cells or an external 12 volt supply. Compared with the 8-inch you get more light for galaxies and globular clusters, and a heavier scope to carry, though still lighter than a 10-inch LX200. It's a good choice if you want a bigger aperture GoTo SCT without a permanent pier. Meade stopped operating in 2024, so check the GoTo, the hand controller and the optics carefully, because factory parts and service are gone.
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Plenty of listings are the tube alone or the mount alone, and a missing hand controller, power supply or counterweight should come off the price.
What to check
The fork's drive motors and the AutoStar are the parts to test. C cells left in the base can leak. The corrector can haze or grow fungus in damp storage, and a heavier tube is harder on the fork in rough shipping.
01AutoStar: Check the AutoStar #497 and its cable are in the photos. The display should come on with the scope.
02Slew test: Ask for a video of it slewing on both axes. The motors should run smoothly without stalls or grinding.
03Battery bay: Ask for a photo of the battery holder. The contacts should be clean, with no leaked residue.
04Corrector: Ask for a photo of the front glass lit at an angle by a flashlight. It should be clear, with no haze or fungus.
05Clutches: Ask whether the tube holds still with the locks on. It shouldn't drift or droop when parked.
06Packing: Ask how the fork and tube will ship, or whether pickup is possible. Good is a double box with foam around the fork arms.
Only two 10-inch LX90s are for sale, so the $2,100–2,375 band is built from their two asks, neither with shipping quoted, and isn't a market read. We'd start with the $1,999 LX90-ACF titled with its tripod, and get a shipping quote and photos of the fork and AutoStar, since its only photo is the corrector. Ask for a video of it slewing on both axes with its AutoStar #497, a photo of the C-cell holder in the base and a flashlight photo through the corrector at an angle, because Meade stopped operating in 2024 and factory parts are gone. Skip the zero-feedback seller's $2,500 one.
