Meade launched the LX200 in 1992 with 8 and 10-inch versions, and it put computer-pointed Schmidt-Cassegrains on serious amateurs' fork mounts for a generation. The name covers three scopes. The Classic used a keypad and ran from a mains cord. The LX200GPS added the AutoStar II hand controller with upgradable firmware, a GPS receiver, a primary mirror lock and a zero image-shift microfocuser. In 2008 the line moved to Meade's Advanced Coma-Free optics and became the LX200-ACF, which runs on eight C cells or 12 volts. Meade itself stopped operating in 2024, so parts and repairs now come from third parties. A working one with its hand controller and clean optics is still a capable 8-inch GoTo scope.

Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Plenty of listings are the tube alone or the mount alone, and a missing hand controller, power supply or counterweight should come off the price.
What to check
The GoTo electronics and drive motors are the parts to test, since a scope that won't slew on one axis needs more than a quick fix. C-cell batteries left in the base can leak. The corrector can haze in damp storage, and Meade no longer exists to supply parts.
01Generation: Look at the hand controller and labels to see whether it's a Classic, GPS or ACF. Each has different power and features, so match it to the listing.
02Slew test: Ask for a video of it aligning and slewing to a named star. Both axes should drive smoothly with no grinding or stalls.
03Hand controller: Check the hand controller and cable are in the photos with a clear display. A scope without one can't use its GoTo.
04Battery bay: Ask for a photo of the battery compartment in the base. The contacts should be clean, with no leaked residue.
05Corrector: Ask for a photo of the front glass lit at an angle by a flashlight. It should be clear, with no haze or fungus.
06Power: Ask which power cord or adapter comes with it. A missing supply is a small cost, but you need the right one.
07Packing: Ask how the fork and tube will ship. The mirror lock, if fitted, should be set, with foam around the fork arms.
We'd buy the LX200 Classic titled as a complete kit with a hand controller at $1,262 delivered, the bottom of the $1,200–1,450 band most of these ask. There are at least 9 for sale, and the lowest ask is an $850 LX200GPS with its case, shown on its tripod, but it quotes no shipping, so get a quote before you compare. Three come from Japan as the EMC, the f/6.3 Japanese-market Classic, two of them titled without a tripod, and the oniku_99 and tokyo_time_capsule listings share one photo. Ask any seller for a short video of it slewing on both axes with its own hand controller and a flashlight photo through the corrector at an angle, since Meade stopped operating in 2024 and parts now come from third parties. Skip the 88.9% seller and the $4,256 zero-feedback listing from Spain with a stock photo.

The lowest delivered price here, $1,128 with free shipping from Japan, for the EMC, the f/6.3 Japanese-market Classic, on its fork. It's titled no tripod, so budget for one, and ask which power supply comes with it, since Japan runs on 100 V.
A Classic titled as a complete kit with AutoStar at $1,262 delivered, the bottom of the band, and the photo shows it on its tripod. The Classic shipped with a keypad, so ask which controller is in the box and for a video of it slewing.
