Orion SkyQuest XT10 Classic
The XT10 Classic is the step up from the XT8: a 10-inch mirror at f/4.7 with the same 1,200 mm focal length, so it gathers more light in a tube about the same length. The extra light shows more in galaxies and globular clusters, and the short focal ratio gives wide views with low-power eyepieces. It uses the same simple formula as the XT8, with CorrecTension springs, a 2-inch Crayford focuser and a base that comes apart from the tube. The tube weighs 30.8 lb and the base 22.6 lb, so it's still a two-trip carry for one person. A faster mirror needs more careful collimation than the XT8. Orion closed in 2024, so there's no factory support, but there's little to break.

Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Plenty of listings are the tube alone or the mount alone, and a missing hand controller, power supply or counterweight should come off the price.
What to check
Mirror coatings dull with age and damp storage. Particleboard bases swell if they get wet. At f/4.7 collimation matters more than on the XT8, so the knobs and center mark need to be there.
- 01Mirror: Ask for a photo down the tube at the main mirror with a flashlight. It should be bright and even, with no gray patches.
- 02Base: Check the base edges and bearing pads in the photos. They should be solid, not swollen or chipped.
- 03Springs: Make sure the CorrecTension springs and knobs are included. The tube needs them to stay balanced.
- 04Collimation: Check the collimation knobs and center mark are there. Plan to collimate it on the first night.
- 05Movement: Ask the seller to move the tube in both directions. It should glide smoothly, not stick or jump.
- 06Pickup: Plan two trips or a helper for a 31 lb tube and a 23 lb base. Local pickup lets you check the mirror in person.

§ Oct 14, 2026Only two 10-inch SkyQuests are for sale, both at $850 with no shipping quoted, so the band is just those two asks and not a market read. Neither title says Classic, one reading only "10XT Deluxe" and the other "skyquest 10" DOB", so ask each seller to confirm it's the XT10 Classic and not the IntelliScope XT10i. We'd start with the one whose photo shows a complete Dob on its base with no IntelliScope parts in sight, while the other's photo is the tube still wrapped in its box. The tube weighs 30.8 lb and the base 22.6 lb, so plan on pickup or ask for a quote, and ask for a flashlight photo of the main mirror down the tube, which should look bright and even. Orion closed in 2024, but there's little on an XT10 to break, and at f/4.7 expect to collimate it after the trip.
