Celestron · Schmidt-Cassegrain · 5 to 8 inches · 2009 on
The EdgeHD 8 is Celestron's 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain rebuilt for cameras. Celestron unveiled the EdgeHD line in 2009 with extra correcting lenses in the baffle tube that flatten the focal plane, which Celestron says is more than three times flatter than a standard SCT, so stars stay sharp out to the corners of a sensor. It keeps the C8's 203 mm aperture and f/10 focal ratio, adds knobs that hold the mirror still during long exposures, and vents the rear cell to help it cool. Every EdgeHD tube is Fastar compatible, and a dedicated reducer takes it to f/7. For looking through an eyepiece it shows about what a good C8 shows. The extra money buys sharper star fields on a camera.
The full kit
Check the listing photos against this list, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Plenty of listings are the tube alone or the mount alone, and a missing hand controller, power supply or counterweight should come off the price.
The corrector can haze or grow fungus in damp storage like any SCT. The tighter optics show poor collimation sooner than a standard SCT. Reducers and adapter rings meant for standard SCTs don't suit it, so check what a listing includes.
New to used telescopes? How to check a used telescope covers optics, mounts, power and shipping, and what a complete kit looks like helps with tube-only and mount-only listings.
Buying guide
If you have a mount, we'd buy the new EdgeHD 8 tube at $1,499 with free shipping from a dealer, and if you don't, a new Advanced VX kit at $2,339. Only one used Edge is listed among at least 10, a Japan tube with accessories at $2,266, which asks $767 more than the new tube, so the $2,325 to $2,850 band is new dealer stock, from Advanced VX kits at $2,339 to a CGEM II kit at $2,879. On any used one, look for EdgeHD lettering on the tube, ask for a flashlight photo through the corrector at an angle, and check that a claimed reducer is the EdgeHD 0.7x model. Skip the $5,500 Advanced VX kit at about 2.3 times the median and the zero-feedback account using a dealer's title at $2,862.
